Review: "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" is not quite as good as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" when it comes to Animagic Christmas specials, but that is just because the former has the Island of Misfit Toys, one of the most inspired ideas for that genre since Linus explained what Christmas is all about. But on the other side of the ledger is S.D. Klueger, the Mailman Narrator of the show who is voiced by Fred Astaire and looks like him a well. I still have not figured out if Kris Kringle looks anything like Mickey Rooney, but Fred Astaire fans will enjoy having this miniature version even if they are not big fans of the Rankin/Bass special. This is especially true because it comes with his special mail vehicle.
Inspired in the broadest sense by J. Fred Coots' song "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town," the 1970 Christmas special tells how the abandoned baby adopted by the Kringles, a family of elves living in Rainbow Valley who are the first toy makers to the king, grew up to become Santa Claus. Not only does S. D. ("Special Delivery") Kluger narrate the story, he gets to sing the title song. The Kluger figure is poseable and you can remove his hat, but even more impressive is the North Pole Mail Vehicle that looks like is just drove out of your television set to make one of those special deliveries. As an added treat, the truck plays "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" (and in a true sign of class, the batteries are actually included!).
There are a pair of sets of companion figures, one of which will give you Miss Jessica, Kris Kringle, and Topper, while the other has Tanta Kringle, the Burgermeister Mesiterburger, and Grimsby You can also get the Winter Warlock separately, with all of the figures matching to scale. The common denominator is that these toys are down right, with attention being paid to detail, which includes not only the figures but the accessories. Playing Mantis does the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" figures as well as these from "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" and a wide assortment of "Peanuts" figures for all of your holiday occasions.
