Summary: Larry not on the line
Date: 2005-08-30
Rating: 5
Review: Great figure! One reviewer gave the impression that Larry is on the line shooting a three pointer. Well, in this picture he is, but the figure is not facing where the basket would be. When the figure is rotated and facing the imaginary basket, both feet are behind the line. I hope that review didn't give the impression that the figure is inaccurate in some way, because this is not the case. I can't wait for the next set of six! I hope Magic Johnson is in that one!

Summary: The Legend
Date: 2005-07-20
Rating: 5
Review: This captures Larry The Legend as we all remember him, spotting up for a jumper. A must have for a Celtic and McFarlane fan. I collect all of the Boston Sports Figures and Larry is the icon of Boston Sports Personalities.

Summary: Larry Legend with his toe on the line? I don't think so.
Date: 2005-06-08
Rating: 4
Review: With McFarlane Toys producing actions figures of Hall of Fame baseball players with its first two Cooperstown Series, it is not surprising that they have now put out their first series of NBA Legend 6" figures. It is also not surprising that Larry Bird is one of the members of the initial set. An All-Star in twelve of the 13 seasons he played, Larry Bird was named N.B.A. Rookie of the Year (1980), was voted M.V.P. three years in a row (1984, 1985, 1986), and won three N.B.A. championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and an Olympic gold medal (1992). For his career Bird averaged 24.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 6.3 assists a game (23.8, 10.3 and 6.5 for the playoffs). In 1998 Bird was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. When experts and fans list the ten greatest players in N.B.A. history, Larry Bird is almost always ends up on such lists.
Larry Bird defined the notion of "Celtic Pride" and along with Magic Johnson defined how a new generation of fans saw the game should be played. Bird was the personification of hustle and consistency, and he excelled at all aspects of the game: scorer, passer, rebounder, defender, team player, and, ultimately, as a clutch performer. With the game on the line, opponents did not want to see Bird with the ball because he was a deadly shooter: .496 from the floor, .376 from three-point range, and .886 from the charity stripe. He would sometimes practice taking three-point shots with his eyes closed, and won the first three three-point shooting championships at the league's All-Star weekend. So it seems rather ironic that this figure shows Larry Legend with his toe on the three-point line painted on the parquet floor of the Boston Garden. He took 1,727 three-point shots in his career, with another 249 in the playoffs, and if the number of times he too a shot with his foot on the line can be counted on more than two hands I would really be surprised.
However, this particular oddity should not deter fans of Larry Legend from picking up this figure, which does a decent job of getting the look of determination on Bird's face (and notice the attention to detail on the SIDE of the parquet floor). The other figures in the NBA Legends Series I are Julius Erving with the Philadelphia 76ers, Bill Walton with the Portland Trailblazers, Pete Maravich with the New Orleans Jazz, Wilt Chamberlain with the Philadelphia Warriors (for the 100 point game), and Willis Reed with the New York Knickerbockers. I was going to note the irony that the only two deceased members of the N.B.A.'s 50 Greatest Players team are included in the set with Maravich and Chamberlain, but then George Mikan passed away last week. Hopefully Mikan will be included in the next set along with some of the great Celtics from the past (Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, and John Havilcek just to name three). Of course, once you have a Larry Bird figure it seems you should have a Magic Johnson one as well, you know?
